FAQ

Film & Podcast Documentaries

What’s the difference between Film and Podcast — and which should I choose?

Both formats use the same guided interview process, but they capture stories in different ways:

  • Film Documentary
    • Captures voice, facial expressions, and body language.
    • Brings in old photos/videos as part of the story.
    • Great for visual family archives, milestones, and legacy keepsakes.
  • Podcast Documentary
    • Focuses only on voice and storytelling — no camera.
    • More intimate and relaxed, like listening in on a conversation.
    • Perfect if you’re camera-shy, or if you want something portable and shareable on audio platforms.

Tip: If you want to preserve presence (seeing and hearing), choose Film. If you want voice and words only, or prefer not being on camera, choose Podcast.

Why choose a documentary (film or podcast)?

A documentary captures more than facts—it preserves voice, personality, and the way stories are told. Film adds facial expressions and body language; podcast focuses purely on voice and intimacy. Both create a keepsake your family can revisit and share.

Why not just write a memoir or book?

Books are wonderful, but they take time and often stall. A guided interview is faster and easier—and it preserves the emotion, timing, and tone of your stories in a way text can’t.

I’m shy about being on camera—what are my options?

Totally normal. We make on-camera interviews comfortable and conversational. If you truly prefer audio-only, choose the podcast format—it’s the same guided process without cameras.

When is the best time to record?

Simply: now. Families often wish they’d recorded parents or grandparents earlier, while voices and memories were fresh. Capturing stories sooner ensures they’re preserved.

Where does it happen?

Film: Usually in your home or another meaningful location (a childhood house, a family cabin, your workplace).

Podcast: Typically in our studio or a quiet space at your home or business; remote sessions are also possible.

We are based in Vancouver, BC, but we’re happy to travel nationally or internationally to record your story where it matters most. Travel costs vary depending on location.

Story Types

What kinds of stories do people tell?

There’s no limit, but most fall into a few categories:

  • Autobiographies and personal journeys
  • Family histories
  • Love stories and relationships
  • Milestones (birthdays, retirements, graduations)
  • Snapshots of family life
  • Business and entrepreneurial stories

Individuals & Families

Why start with parents or grandparents?

Because their voices and memories are irreplaceable. Once captured, you’ll always have the comfort of hearing their laughter and wisdom again — and the assurance that your family’s history is safe for future generations.

What about milestones?

Big life moments — weddings, anniversaries, graduations, retirements — are perfect opportunities to record a story that can be enjoyed again and again.

What about everyday family life?

Kids grow up fast. Recording a short film every year or two creates a priceless time capsule of your family’s journey.

Preparing for Your Interview

Why a pre-interview?

It helps us understand what stories you want to highlight (and what topics you’d rather skip). This way, the main interview flows smoothly and feels more like a conversation.

Can I suggest questions?

Of course. If there are must-ask (or must-avoid) questions, we’ll make sure to respect that.

How should I prepare?

Think about your favorite stories — but don’t script them. The magic comes from speaking naturally, in your own words.

Can I invite others to join?

Yes, depending on the package. If you’d like to involve more people, we can work with you to create the right setup.

What should I wear?

Something comfortable, solid-colored, and not too busy on camera. Skip flashy jewelry or bold patterns.

Hair and makeup?

Totally up to you — whatever makes you feel most confident.

The Interview Day

What will the day look like?

We’ll share a schedule so you know what to expect, including breaks. Most shoots take about a day.

What if I forget something I wanted to say?

Don’t worry. We guide the conversation and can always revisit a question.

Can you include someone remotely?

Yes. We can arrange remote interviews if a loved one lives elsewhere.

Do you offer other languages?

Right now, we record in English but are exploring additional language options.

Editing

What if I say something I don’t want included?

Just let us know. You’ll also have a chance to review a draft and suggest changes.

Can I provide photos or old video clips?

Yes — those personal touches bring stories to life. We’ll guide you on what works best.

How long does editing take?

It depends on your package, but we’ll give you a clear timeline once we know the scope.

Final Product

How will I receive it?

Your finished film or podcast will be stored securely online, with easy sharing options. You’ll also be able to download it directly.

Do I own it?

Yes — the finished film belongs to you.

Can I share clips on social media?

Yes. We include short highlight clips perfect for sharing.

Do I get the raw footage?

We don’t provide raw footage, since it’s unpolished and incomplete. What you’ll receive is a finished, professional heirloom.

Can I add new chapters later?

Absolutely. Many families come back to capture more stories or milestones over time.

Privacy

How are files stored?

Securely, on a private, password-protected site. Only you decide who gets access.

Pricing & Payment

How much does it cost?

It depends on your project. Once we understand your needs, we’ll send you a tailored estimate.

How do payments work?

We typically ask for half up front and the balance before the shoot. We accept e-transfers, cheques, or wire transfers.

Gifting

Can I give this as a gift?

Yes — it’s one of the most meaningful gifts you can give. Perfect for parents, grandparents, or anyone celebrating a major milestone.

Can I be there when someone else tells their story?

Yes, with their permission. We’ll make room for you to be part of the session.
