Every Thanksgiving, the same scene plays out at tables across Canada.
Someone’s grandfather starts a story about his first winter here. Someone’s mother describes the kitchen she grew up in. The younger people at the table half-listen, because they have heard it before, and because there will always be another Thanksgiving.
Until there is not.
The Interview Nobody Planned
We spend a lot of our time setting up interviews. Two cameras, soft light from a window, a quiet room, a cup of tea within reach. We do it because the setting matters: people tell better stories when they feel comfortable.
But the best interview setting in the world already exists, and it is free. It is your family’s dinner table on a holiday weekend.
Everyone is relaxed. Nobody is in a hurry. Three generations are in the same room, which happens only a few times a year. And the old stories come out on their own, without anyone having to be convinced to talk.
The only thing missing is someone paying attention.
Ask One Real Question
Here is a small challenge for this weekend. Pick one person at the table, usually the oldest, and ask them one question you have never asked.
Not “how are you.” Something real:
- How did you two actually meet?
- What was your first job, and what did it pay?
- What did your mother cook on holidays?
- How did you decide to come to Canada?
- What were you most afraid of when you were my age?
- What is something you are proud of that nobody in this family knows about?
Then stop talking and listen. The first answer is usually short. The second one, if you wait for it, is the real story.
Press Record
If you do nothing else this weekend, do this: when the story starts, put your phone on the table and open the voice recorder. You do not need video. You do not need to announce it. A ten-minute voice memo of your grandmother describing her wedding day is worth more than any photo you will take of the turkey.
We have met many families who wish they had done exactly this. Not one who regrets doing it.
When a Voice Memo Is Not Enough
Sometimes that one question opens a door, and you realize how much is still behind it. The war years. The first apartment. The business that almost failed. The decision that changed everything, that nobody ever talks about.
That is where we come in. At The Life Chronicles, we sit down with your parent or grandparent, in their own home, and help them tell their story properly. For some families that is a cinematic Family Legacy Film; for others it is a Story Podcast, an audio portrait they can listen to for years. You can see both options on our Packages page. Either way, the person at the centre of it gets to be heard, carefully and completely, by someone whose only job that day is to listen.
Many of our clients first reach out in the weeks after Thanksgiving. They heard something at the table they had never heard before, and they did not want to leave the rest to chance.
A Gift That Is Ready by Christmas
If you are already thinking about what to give your parents this year, a recorded story session is one of the few gifts that gets more valuable every year. Sessions booked in October are usually ready to share by the holidays.
Book a free pre-interview call and we will walk you through how it works, what to expect, and whether it is the right fit for your family.
Start at the Table
You do not need us to begin. You need one question, a little patience, and the courage to press record.
Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at The Life Chronicles. Ask them something real this weekend.
