Why You Should Record Your Family’s History

We each carry countless stories, lessons, and gifts within us. Too often, we keep them locked away — but the truth is, they are meant to be shared. Think for a moment: Who could you share your stories with? Who might you learn more about if you simply asked? Could you sit down and have this conversation with your own loved ones?

Life is short. Life is precious. Every person has something to teach, something to pass on, and something to leave behind.

“People have entire worlds contained within their lives,” says Megan Harris, a research specialist who conducts oral histories for the Veterans History Project at the Library of Congress. “Listening, engaging, and really trying to understand someone’s perspective and what they’ve been through is an experience like no other.”

It’s a reminder that the people we know as “mom” or “uncle” or “grandparent” are also individuals with rich experiences we’ve never heard about. And, as Harris notes, no one can predict the future — which is why recording stories while loved ones are still alive is so important. “If I could have sat down and interviewed my grandmother, I would have told her that this isn’t for posterity — this is for her great-great-grandchildren who will want to hear what life was like.”

Dina Gachman, journalist and author of So Sorry for Your Loss, echoes the same urgency. She was able to teach her son about his great-grandfather thanks to an old recorded interview, calling it a gift that will continue to be passed down through generations. “When somebody’s gone, their stories are gone, right? Why did I not ask a million questions when they were here?” she reflects.

At The Life Chronicles, we guide you through this process step by step. In a relaxed, interview-style conversation, we help you uncover those chapters and bring them to life on film — in your own words, with your own voice. The result is a cinematic portrait you can share today and pass down tomorrow.
